Hussein looks at him and the coffee stains on his cuff. “I’m not against people understanding each other,” he says. “I’m against thinking understanding is the same as translation.” He gestures to the screen where a woman folds her arms and cries without speaking. “That cry will be captioned as ‘sobbed quietly.’ But the mouth purses, the throat blocks—there’s a politics to that block.
